Fetal Medicine

The Fetal Medicine unit at Mount Sinai has a team of highly trained doctors, nurses and other health professionals who are dedicated to the investigation and management of the full range of fetal problems which may occur in pregnancy.

We use state of the art ultrasound equipment to allow us to thoroughly examine the fetus in utero, and we have access to other imaging modalities where necessary – such as fetal echocardiography (at HSC) and MRI.

The widespread use of ultrasound over the last 15-20 years has given us great insight into the developing unborn baby (fetus). Ongoing improvements in ultrasound and other diagnostic techniques have allowed earlier and more accurate evaluation of many fetal conditions. Invasive obstetric procedures now have a definite role in the investigation and management of carefully selected conditions and have opened up an exciting new range of options for fetal therapy. Comprehensive parental counselling is essential and a regionalized, integrated multidisciplinary team approach is fundamental to the optimal management of these cases.

Ontario Fetal Centre

In April 2018, the Ontario Government granted provincial budget funding to support Canada’s first dedicated centre to care for fetuses requiring high-risk intervention. The Ontario Fetal Centre (OFC), based at Mount Sinai and in partnership with The Hospital for Sick Children, recognizes the need for more comprehensive, end-to-end care and support through every step of a patient’s pregnancy and after birth. Research, clinical practice, and education helps us strive to optimize clinical outcomes and ultimately improve the quality of life for these children.

Our dedicated team of experts is committed to providing excellent, innovative, comprehensive and compassionate care to patients and their families, from prenatal diagnosis to fetal intervention and post-natal support.
